Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Oswego, 20-3, in SUNYAC Play

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team dropped a 20-3 decision to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Oswego on Thursday afternoon at the North Turf Field.
 
The Hawks fall to 3-10, 0-5 SUNYAC and move on to play The College at Brockport on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. The Lakers improve to 8-3, 4-2 SUNYAC and return home to host SUNY Canton on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
 
The Lakers netted two goals within the first six minutes of game play to break open the scoring but junior midfielder Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) found the back of the goal off a feed from junior attacker Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) at the 8:22 mark to make it a 2-1 game.
 
Following two more goals by the Lakers, Gottschalk and freshman midfielder Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego) each added a goal to slice the deficit to 4-3. However the Lakers would score four unanswered goals within the final two minutes of the first half to lead, 8-3, at intermission.
 
Coming out of the break, Oswego netted 12 unanswered second half goals to take the final 20-3 win. 
 
Gottschalk led the way with two goals while Wagner recorded two assists. Junior goalie Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) picked up eight ground balls for the Hawks while freshman midfielder Joey-Lynn Henderson (Ruby, N.Y./Kingston) and sophomore attacker Orlagh Brady (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) caused two turnovers apiece.
 
For Oswego, freshman attacker Teresa Shattuck and senior midfielder Esther Gabriel keyed the Oswego offense, each scoring four goals. Gabriel also finished with seven draw controls while senior attacker Erannan Shattuck distributed seven assists and picked up five ground balls.
 
Roemer finished with 11 saves in the loss for New Paltz, while sophomore goalie Angela Ponto recorded three stops for Oswego.
