BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team continued to strengthen its push for a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on Friday at the Clark V. Whited Complex, splitting a SUNYAC doubleheader with The College at Brockport. New Paltz fell, 10-4, in game one before winning game two, 9-1, in six innings.
New Paltz moves to 14-13 overall (5-5 SUNYAC) with the results and next visits SUNY Geneseo tomorrow for a 12 p.m. doubleheader. Brockport moves to 16-14 overall (2-8 SUNYAC) with the results and next hosts SUNY Oneonta tomorrow for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
Game 1: Brockport 10, New Paltz 4
Brockport used a six-run second inning before adding insurance with a three-run sixth, claiming game one of the twinbill.
The Hawks got on the board first in the first inning, as freshman shortstop
Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) came home on an error. The Golden Eagles countered with a six-run second, with a two-run sacrifice fly giving the home team a 6-1 lead.
Junior designated player
Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) cut the deficit in half with a two-run home run in the top half of the fourth before Brockport extended the lead to four with a run in the fifth. An RBI single by sophomore pinch hitter/right fielder
Danielle Bruno (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) once again sliced the deficit to three in the sixth, but Brockport closed the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning to pull out the victory.
Sophomore third baseman
Alexa Mastando (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) keyed the Hawk attack in game one, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, while senior designated player Amanda Yuhas batted 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Brockport.
Senior pitcher
Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) shouldered the loss in the circle for the Hawks, while senior pitcher Jaime Berger picked up the win for the Golden Eagles.
Game 2: New Paltz 9, Brockport 1 (6 inn.)
In game two, it was New Paltz using a six-run inning to catapult its way to victory, as six different Hawks crossed in the fourth en route to a 9-1 win in six innings.
The Hawks broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth, with four runs coming across on Golden Eagle miscues before Mastando drove in two runs with a triple down the left-field line. Freshman second baseman
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) plated one run in the fifth off a sacrifice fly before two more New Paltz runs scored on miscues in the sixth to give the visitors a 9-0 advantage. While Brockport scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to eight, the Golden Eagles were unable to get any closer, as the Hawks salvaged the split.

Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) led the New Paltz offense by going 2-for-4 with one run scored, while Yuhas batted 2-for-2 to key the Brockport attack.
Junior pitcher
Taylor Corwin (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) earned the game-two victory in the circle for the Hawks, yielding one unearned run off five hits while striking out five. Three different Brockport pitchers threw in the loss, though all nine runs the trio gave up were unearned.
