NEW PALTZ, NY - The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team opened up Saturday with a 3-0 win over Stockton before dropping to NYU 3-1 to finish off the 2016 Hawks Invitational.
New Paltz now has a record of 3-5 and will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Hawk Center when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Hawks earned their first three-set win of the season over a Stockton team that was 6-0 entering the match. Senior outside hitter
Anna Paulik (Wantagh, NY / Wantagh) led the offense with a match-high 17 kills and contributed defensively with seven digs, while senior outside hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) was right behind her with 16 kills.

Maddie Zwickl (Chester, NY / Warwick Valley) distributed a match-high 42 assists and freshman outside hitter
Maddie Van Pelt (Montgomery, NY / Valley Central) also contributed with six kills and eight digs.
The Hawks jumped out to a quick start in the first set, grabbing a 15-7 lead. The Ospreys then went on a 10-6 run to cut the deficit to 21-17. Stockton later drew closer as the score stood at 23-21, but kills by Roessler and Paulik won the first set for New Paltz.
Both teams traded the lead early in the second set, as it remained tied at 9-9. However the Hawks allowed Stockton to score just five more points, as New Paltz won the second set and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Similar to the second set, the third set saw the two teams tied at 9-9 early on. An 11-7 run by the Hawks gave them a 20-16 lead as they looked poised to take the match, but the Ospreys scored four-consecutive points to tie the set at 20-all. New Paltz would close out the match on a 5-2 run thanks to kills by Roessler and Paulik to give the Hawks the win.
NYU 3, New Paltz 1 (25-27, 21-25, 25-16, 13-25)
The Hawks dropped the first two sets to the Violets, including a tight 27-25 decision in the first stanza, to wrap up the tournament. Roessler floored a team-high 15 kills while Van Pelt enjoyed a double-double with 10
kills and 18 digs. Paulik also aided in distributing 16 assists, moving to setter during the match.
In addition, Paulik had 13 digs which gave her over 1,000 digs for her career (1,002), ranking 16th most all-time in program history.
The opening set was back-and-forth for the duration as neither side took more than a two-point lead until NYU went ahead 16-13. The Hawks tied the set at 20 thanks to kills by Van Pelt and Roessler and were at set point (25-24) before the Violets rattled off three unanswered points to hand New Paltz the defeat.
Tied at 19 in set number two, NYU went on a 5-0 tear to claim a 24-19 lead. The Hawks looked to rally, however, and got within three (24-21) before the Violets ended the threat.
New Paltz was able to survive by winning the third frame, jumping out to a 10-6 lead thanks in part to several Roessler kills. The Hawks increased that lead to seven (19-12) and closed out the set with 6-3 run to stay alive.
But the fourth set was in favor of NYU as the Violets started on an 8-3 run. After getting within four (14-10), the Hawks were then outscored 8-1 to fall behind 22-11 and could not recover after.
