NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Playing its first home game of 2016 in addition to its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest on Friday, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey squad defeated host Morrisville State 3-0 at North Turf Field.
The Hawks (4-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) outshot the Mustangs (1-5, 0-1 SUNYAC) 26-2 and attempted 27 penalty corners in the match.
The contest was scoreless in the first half, with New Paltz firing off nine shots but the Hawks could not find the back of the cage.
The second period was different as the Hawks broke through for three goals on 17 shots.

Maggie Cottrell (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) started the offense in the 49
th minute, deflecting a pass from freshman
Kaitlyn Gunter (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead.

Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) blasted home her fourth score of the year to give the Hawks a 2-0 cushion. To wrap up the scoring, senior
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) took a feed off a corner from O'Reilly and visited the back of the cage in the 62
nd minute.

Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) made two stops in the game for the Hawks. McKeveny led all players with 11 shots, seven on target. Junior
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora) fired four shots as well.
