CANTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey opened up the 2016 campaign with a 4-1 win against host St. Lawrence on Saturday in the first contest of the North Country Tournament.
The Hawks (1-0), who have won the past four State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) titles, enjoyed two goals from senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East), including a score just 2:05 into the contest. With the pair of scores, McKeveny is now tied for third place all-time with 32 career goals (Patricia Erickson, 2002-04).
McKeveny, who also scored in the 59th minute, tallied an assist as well and led all players with 13 shots. Freshman forward
Sophia Urrutia (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) picked up her first collegiate goal in the first half and also chipped in an assist while junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) registered a score of her own on a deflection in the 45th minute.
New Paltz outshot the host Saints (0-1) 26-16, as five players fired at least two shots apiece. The Hawks held a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) stopped a career-best 11 saves in the cage.
The Hawks will now play Utica tomorrow at 11 a.m. to wrap up the weekend tournament.
