CANTON, N.Y. – Four different players scored for the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team as the Hawks defeated Utica 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in the North Country Tournament hosted by St. Lawrence.
For the afternoon, New Paltz outshot the Pioneers (0-2) 33-9, with 23 shots on goal. Senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) led all players with 12 shots.
New Paltz (2-0) found themselves trailing 1-0 after a Utica goal in the 3rd minute but a blast from senior back
Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) knotted the match at 1-1 in the 8th minute.
The Hawks grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 25th minute thanks to a goal from sophomore forward
Serena Capsello (Baldwinsville, NY/C. W. Baker), off an assist from sophomore midfield/back
Maggie Cottrell (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland).
The second half remained scoreless until the 45th minute when junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) tagged her second goal of the season to give the Hawks a 3-1 cushion. The scoring concluded when junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora) notched a goal off a penalty corner, thanks to assists from McKeveny and Roemer, in the 49th minute.

Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) earned her second victory of the year, stopping seven shots during the match.
The Hawks will travel to Montclair State on Wednesday, Sept. 7 for a 7 p.m. match.
