NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team opened the 2017 portion of the season with a 140-116 dual meet victory over visiting State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponent SUNY Cortland on Friday evening in Elting Pool.
The Hawks improve to 1-0 and will return to Elting Pool on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. to host SUNYAC and Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta.
The 200 medley relay team of freshman
Chelsea Angulas (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego Free Academy), sophomore
Katie Donlevy (Bayside, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy), sophomore
Jaimie Kaefer (North Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) and sophomore
Kaleigh O'Halloran (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) kicked off the meet with a 1:53.44 performance.
New Paltz repeated their success as Donlevy, junior
Molly McCulloch (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patent), sophomore
Nicole Lee (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and O'Halloran touched the pad first in the final race of the night, the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.3, exhibition).
Kaefer and Angulas were both double event winners for the Hawks. Kaefer touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.18) and 200 backstroke (2:10.75) while Angulas won the 100 backstroke (1:01.58) and 50 freestyle (26.14). Kaefer came close to breaking her own pool record in the 400 individual medley (4:42.80), which was marked as exhibition.
Donlevy also had a top finish for the Hawks, touching first in the 200 yard breakstroke (2:36.45) while junior
Megan Joseph (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Lee also scooped up first-place finishes with Joseph in the 100 breakstroke (1:11.29) and Lee in the 100 freestyle (56.00) while senior
Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) clinched the top spot in the 1,000 freestyle (11:22.97).
