SUNY New Paltz Men's Basketball Can't Get Past Rutgers-Camden In Consolation Game of Scotty Wood Tournament

| By:
Box Score Allentown, PA — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team out-shot and out-rebounded Rutgers-Camden in the consolation game of the Scotty Wood Tournament at Muhlenberg College Saturday, but did not win the turnover battle on the court, which proved the difference in the game.

"Our 24 turnovers led to more field goal attempts for them," said Hawks coach Keith Kenney following his team's 71-59 loss Saturday. "We didn't make good decisions and turned the ball over."

SUNY New Paltz (0-2) trailed for most of the contest, but was in striking distance throughout the game. It took its first lead after Jake Passaretti found Nick Paquette out on the perimeter for three, pushing the score, 15-14 in favor of the Hawks.

Paquette continued his hot hand from 3-point land, knocking down seven 3's on the day. He finished 7-of-9 from behind the arc, but SUNY New Paltz couldn't take advantage of his shooting touch.Nick Paquette GIF

With 4 minutes, 40 seconds left in the first half, the Scarlet Raptors (1-2) re-took the lead after a trey by Marcus Taylor. Rutgers-Camden then never withheld the lead from there and entered the half with a 35-27 advantage.

The Hawks got within six points eight different times, and cut the score to its closest margin at 64-59 with 3:28 left in the second half after a two made free throws by Nick Arthur. However, they couldn't build on the momentum to gain back the advantage.

As a team, SUNY New Paltz shot 37.3 percent from the field, including 32.1 percent from 3, while the Scarlet Raptors knocked down 36.9 percent from the floor and 25 percent from behind the arc. The Hawks also held the advantage on the board, pulling down 41 to Rutgers-Camden's 30.

Paquette led all scorers with 21 points, after shooting 7-of-10 from the field. The Smithtown West alum was a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds and adding two blocks.

Brandon Guest followed offensively with 11 points, and added two boards and an assist. Kevin Coyle pitched in with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Cory Garcia led the team with four assists to go along with five boards and two points.

The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, as it takes on Vassar College in its home opener at 7 p.m.
