New Paltz — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team collected its second-straight win Tuesday after going on the road and defeating Hartwick College, 75-69.

Despite the win, Hawks coach Jamie Seward was disappointed with his team's defensive effort for the third straight game. With Tuesday's contest, SUNY New Paltz is giving up an average of 82 points against per game.

"Quite honestly, it's going to be a long season if we don't start defending a lot better, than we have thus far," Seward said. "This is the worst defensive team I have ever coached. It is early, but it gets late quick, and you can't start saying hello when it's time to say goodbye. We have to show a much greater commitment and show some pride on that end of the floor."

SUNY New Paltz exchanged leads with the Hawks four times before taking the lead for good early in the first quarter.

Madison Van Pelt assisted Demi Herasme in the paint to end the first 10 minutes and add to SUNY New Paltz's lead, 23-16.

Hartwick cut the score as close as three in the second quarter, but SUNY New Paltz was able to keep its cushion with Lindsay Bettke, Marion Dietz and Paige Niemeyer leading the way.

Bettke was the catalyst all night for the Hawks, finishing with 28 points on 55 percent shooting from the field, including 33.3 percent from 3-point range.Lindsay Bettke GIF

"[Lindsay] was spectacular, but we expect that kind of thing from her," Seward said. "What I really like is that she has only three turnovers in the three games including none tonight, and for the amount of time she has the ball in her hands that is pretty impressive."

Dietz, meanwhile, did most of her damage at the free throw line. The sophomore went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe, while also sinking two from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. Niemeyer followed with 13 points, knocking down 6-for-11 from the floor.

"The difference in the game was that we shot the ball well and Marion did a great job getting to the free throw line in the second half, which is vital for us to balance out our offense," Seward added. "But overall, we can't continue to rely on out-scoring our opponents or it's going to be a long season."

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Nov. 28 for its season-opener against Vassar College at 7 p.m.
