BUFFALO – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team earned a total of 567 points to claim its second-consecutive second place finish, out of nine teams, as the final day of the 2017 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships came to a close at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College.
In the first event of the evening session, senior
Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) posted an eighth-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle, clocking in at 18:46.35 while sophomore
Degen Mariniello (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) placed 11th (19:12.57) and sophomore
Whitney Knowlton-Wardle (Chatham, Mass./Nauset Regional) earned 19
th (20:12.85) in the consolation final.
Sophomore
Jaimie Kaefer (North Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham), freshman
Chelsea Angulas (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego Free Academy) and freshman
Samantha Woll (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) all made the championship final of the 200 backstroke with Kaefer touching the pad in 2:08.58 to earn third-place while Angulas followed behind in 2:09.03 for fourth-place and Woll finished eighth with a time of 2:12.42.
In the 100 freestyle, sophomore
Nicole Lee (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and senior
Aimee Del Favero (Auburn, N.Y./Home School) placed seventh (54.04) and eighth (54.32), respectively.
Sophomore
Katie Donlevy (Bayside, N.Y./The Mary Louis Academy) and junior
Megan Joseph (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) represented the Hawks in the 200 breaststroke with Donlevy touching the pad in 2:28.04 for second place and Joseph clocking in at 2:28.70 to take third.
Rounding out the individual events was sophomore
Samantha Conforti (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) who placed eighth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:19.80 while the quartet of Lee, Del Favero, Angulas and Kaefer concluded the day with a second-place win in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking in at 3:33.75.
SUNY Geneseo won its 10
th-straight and 25
th overall team title with 929 points, while SUNY Cortland placed third with 516.5 points. SUNY Oneonta (fourth, 391), The College at Brockport (fifth, 339), SUNY Oswego (sixth, 291), SUNY Potsdam (seventh, 234), SUNY Fredonia (215.5) and Buffalo State (ninth, 65) rounded out the remainder of the field. Based on their finish above the Red Dragons in the finals team standings, the Hawks now lead Oneonta, 18-15, in the Catskill Cup standings.
