NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team secured its spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs with a 90-55 win over Buffalo State on Saturday evening in the Hawk Center.
The Hawks improve to 13-7, 10-4 SUNYAC and are back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they host The College at Brockport in the Hawk Center at 7:30 p.m.
Prior to the contest, senior guard/forward
Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) was honored for becoming the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,177 career-points after recording 20 points against SUNY Oneonta on Jan. 14. Small surpasses Robin Shields '00 who previously held the record for the past 16 years with 1,135 points.
New Paltz stuffed the scoresheet, shooting 48.5 percent (32-of-66) from the floor, 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from beyond the arc and 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the line while holding a 35-34 margin in rebounds, converting 37 points off turnovers and scoring 28 bench points.
Four different New Paltz players reached double-digit scoring in the contest. Small shot 7-of-9 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line to lead New Paltz with 20 points while adding six rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard
Sandi Harris (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) connected 5-of-9 shots from 3-point range to end the game with 15 points. Sophomore
Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) chipped in 13 points and a career-high eight assists while freshman guard
Marion Dietz (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) recorded 10 points and four assists for the Hawks.
For the Bengals, junior guard Caleh McLean scored 14 points while sophomore forward Princella McCullough tallied 12. Freshman guard Lay Knight pulled down a team-high six boards while senior guard Shyasha Spencer doled out five assists.
New Paltz took a 16-13 lead at the end of the first period with Buffalo State immediately closing the gap to one at the start of the second stanza. However the Hawks capitalized on a 9-2 run to pull ahead, 24-15, at the 8:07 mark and would remain in the lead with a 44-29 cushion at the half.
The Hawks were relentless in their offensive efforts in the third quarter, extending their lead by more than 20 points (70-44), which would only increase further in the final period as New Paltz refused to let up on the pressure, eventually securing their 90-55 victory.
