SALISBURY, MD. - The 2017 season did not start in favor of the softball team at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Saturday, as the Hawks fell twice to Lynchburg in the Salisbury Sea Gull Tournament.
New Paltz (0-2) dropped the opener 6-1 before falling in game two, 6-4 as the Hornets improve to 10-2 overall. The Hawks will look to recover tomorrow, playing host Salisbury in a doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m.
In game one, sophomore
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to score senior
Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) for the only run of the game for New Paltz.
Senior pitcher
Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) suffered the loss in the circle, tossing 5 2/3 innings with one strikeout and three walks. Junior
Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus)Â appeared in relief and threw 2 1/3 frames with one strikeout and one walk.
In the second contest, Cappello was tagged with the loss, going 3 2/3 innings with one punchout and three walks. Carlomagno hurled the final 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk.
Offensively, sophomore
Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth for her first career long ball.
Senior
