SALISBURY, Md. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team remains in search of its first victory of 2017 after dropping a twinbill to Salisbury on Sunday, falling to the host Seagulls 7-1 and 9-2, to wrap up the squad's opening weekend.
The Hawks drop to 0-4 and will prepare to head to Florida from March 21-25, playing eight contests during that span. Salisbury, meanwhile, moves to .500 at 8-8.
In game one, the Hawks managed eight hits as junior
Taylor Leonette (East Patchogue, N.Y./.Bellport) and senior
Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) each recorded two base knocks with Carlomagno ripping a double.
Trailing 7-0 in the fifth, New Paltz broke the shutout as senior
Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) laid down a run-scoring bunt single to plate freshman

Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) appeared in relief and tossed 3 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out four.
In the second game, New Paltz fell behind 3-0 before junior
Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) launched a solo shot to left field to get within two runs, 3-1, entering the bottom of the second.
However, the Seagulls would plate four more runs to take a commanding 7-1 edge in the second frame.

Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) reached on a fielder's choice to first base on a sacrifice bunt, which plated junior
Alexa Mastando (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) in the top of the third to conclude the scoring for the Hawks.
Offensively, New Paltz managed just four hits, including Perhacs' homer. Mastando finished the game 2-for-2 at the dish with a walk.
Cappello was charged with the defeat, going 4 1/3 frames in the circle with two strike outs. Carlomagno hurled the final 1 2/3 innings and surrendered six runs to Salisbury.
