Women’s Lacrosse Suffers 11-10 Setback at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Despite holding a 10-5 edge in the second half, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team ultimately fell, 11-10, to host Hartwick College on Monday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

The first half saw New Paltz jump out into the lead before Hartwick managed a comeback to tie the game at 4-all. However a last second goal by senior attacker Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) put the Hawks up 5-4 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Hawks put forth a five goal onslaught, capped off by a goal from junior midfielder Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), to increase their lead to 10-5 with 17:35 left to play but Hartwick countered New Paltz with its own six goal attack to take home the final 11-10 score.

New Paltz falls to 1-1 and will be back in action on Thursday, March 3 when they travel to Elmira College for a 4 p.m. contest. Hartwick improves to 2-1.
Hartwick outshot New Paltz, 28-16, but both teams drew even with 11 draw controls each.

Wagner, Massena, senior midfielder Alexa Criollo (Queens, N.Y./Forest Hills) and junior attacker Caitlyn Morris (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) each had two goals for New Paltz while freshman midfielder Jennifer O'Leary (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and senior midfielder Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) tallied one goal apiece. Morris also dished out two assists while Gottschalk won six draw controls.

Sophomore defender Ashley Seiter (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Mount Sinai) scooped up four groundballs and sophomore goalkeeper Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) made seven saves in net to take the loss.

Senior midfielder Lauren Rosenberg scored four goals for Hartwick while junior attacker Ashley Werner added three goals of her own. Sophomore goalie Carleigh Tarala made four stops in the crease to earn the win.
