CLERMONT, FL. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team dropped a pair of contests on Wednesday in Florida, falling to No. 19 Wisconsin-Whitewater 11-1 in five innings followed by a 3-1 defeat to Southern Maine.
The Hawks fall to 1-7 overall and are off tomorrow. New Paltz will be back in action on Friday, March 24, taking on Colby at 2 p.m. and Calvin at 4:30 p.m.
With the wins, Wisconsin-Whitewater improved to 9-1 overall while Southern Maine moves to 5-3.
Game One: Wisconsin-Whitewater 11, New Paltz 1 (5 innings)
The Warhawks tacked on two runs in the first, four in the second and five more in the fourth to run away with the first game on Wednesday.
Offensively, the Hawks tallied six hits as sophomore
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) turned in a 3-for-3 day, scoring the team's lone run.
Junior
Taylor Leonette (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) went 2-for-3 while sophomore
Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) finished 1-for-3.
In the fourth inning, senior
Megan Carbia (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) reached on an error by the shortstop, which plated Fee to erase the shutout.
Junior
Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) went the distance in the circle, striking out a pair of Warhawks.
Game Two: Southern Maine 3, New Paltz 1
The Huskies scored thrice in the bottom of the first while the Hawks plated one run in the top of the third to complete the scoring in game two.
Senior
Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) scored the team's only run, touching home on a passed ball. Spriggs finished 1-for-2 on the day with a stolen base.
Freshman
Julia DiSpignia (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and freshman
Nicole DePaola (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) also provided base knocks for New Paltz.
Capello hurled the final 5 2/3 innings for the Hawks without allowing a run while striking out two. Senior
Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) suffered the defeat.
