CLERMONT, FLA. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team went 1-1 on Friday in Florida, defeating Colby 8-0 in six innings before falling to Calvin 2-1 in eight frames.

Game One: New Paltz 8, Colby 0 (6 innings)
The Hawks offense woke up in game one on Wednesday, scoring eight runs on 12 hits to earn the six-inning shutout. New Paltz tacked on four runs in the first, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Five student-athletes enjoyed two or more hits against the Mules, led by Taylor Leonette (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport), who finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored
.
Senior Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) went 2-for-2 with two runs while senior Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) enjoyed a 2-for-3 day with two RBI and a triple.

Sophomore Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) enjoyed a 2-for-2 performance with two RBI, one run and one walk.

Junior Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) earned her second win of the year in the circle, throwing six frames of shutout softball, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out six Mules. Cappello helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBI.

In the first, Cappello drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt and Fee followed with an RBI single. DeCosta then came through with a two-run triple to wrap up the four-run first.

In the fifth, Cappello ripped an RBI single and in the sixth, the Hawks completed the scoring as Spriggs notched a run-scoring single followed by an RBI double off the bat of Fee.

Game Two: Calvin 2, New Paltz 1 (8 innings)
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks were able to knot the game up to head to extra innings, but unfortunately fell to the Knights in eight frames.

Offensively, the top of the order did the bulk of the damage for New Paltz as Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), Leonette and Spriggs combined for four the team's five hits.

In the bottom of the seventh, LaFrance led off with a double down the left field line and later tried to score but was thrown out at home to give New Paltz two outs.

With two outs, Fee reached on a throwing error by the Knights' third baseman, which allowed Spriggs to score the game-tying run.

Cappello hurled all eight innings in the defeat, striking out five Knights.
