Women’s Lacrosse Edges Cazenovia, 8-7

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite a six goal push in the second half by the visiting Wildcats, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team managed to sneak by Cazenovia College for an 8-7 non-conference victory on Tuesday afternoon at the North Turf Field.

The Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season, surpassing their three victories in 2016, and return to action on Thursday, March 30 when they host Farmingdale State at 3 p.m. Cazenovia drops to 2-3.

Although the Wildcats landed first on the scoreboard, New Paltz dominated the first half of play as the Hawks scored eight unanswered goals for an 8-1 advantage at halftime. However, Cazenovia came back in the second half to score six unanswered goals of their own but with only 19 seconds remaining, the Hawks won the final draw control and held onto the ball to secure the victory.

New Paltz dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Cazenovia 22-13 while holding a 25-23 edge in groundballs and a 10-7 advantage in draw controls.

Sophomore midfielder Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego Free Academy) and senior midfielder Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) concluded the day with two goals and one assist each. Purtell also scooped up four groundballs, won three draw controls and went 1-1 in free position attempts while Gottschalk picked up three groundballs and won two draw controls.

Senior attacker Nicole Stackpole (North Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) added one goal, scooped up two groundballs and won four draw controls while junior midfielder Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) also had a goal along with one assist and two groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) earned the win in net, making three saves.

For the Wildcats, senior attacker Kaitlin Sheppard scored four goals while freshman attacker Breane Howe recorded two goals of her own and went 2-2 in free position attempts. Senior goalkeeper Abigail Kortz made 10 stops in goal while scooping up six groundballs and causing two turnovers in the loss.
