FREDONIA, N.Y. – Despite falling to host SUNY Fredonia, 2-1, in game one the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team rallied in game two to take home a 2-0 victory as the Hawks split another SUNYAC twinbill on Monday afternoon at Blue Devil Field.
New Paltz improves to 7-13, 5-3 SUNYAC and will remain on the road as the Hawks prepare to face Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m. Fredonia moves to 11-11, 1-5 SUNYAC.
Game One: Fredonia 2, New Paltz 1
The game remained at a 0-0 stalemate until the Hawks broke open the scoring at the top of the seventh as freshman
Caroline Alicandri (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) singled up the middle to bring home freshman
Julia DiSpigna (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy). However the Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the inning with a walk off two RBI single to seal the win.
The Hawks scattered seven hits and committed only two errors while Fredonia recorded two hits off three runs and committed one error.
Sophomore
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) went 2-for-3 at the plate while senior
Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) was 2-for-2 with one walk. Junior
Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) pitched the loss, giving up three hits and walking three batters while striking out three.
Junior Nikki Lent went 1-for-3 at the plate, recording two RBI for the Blue Devils. Freshman Katie Yudin was 1-for-2 at bat with one run and earned the win in the circle, allowing three hits while striking out two batters and walking one.
Game Two: New Paltz 2, Fredonia 0
Similar to the first game, neither team was able to land on the scoreboard for the first few innings until New Paltz scored its first run in the top of the fifth as Alicandri took advantage of a wild pitch to head into home plate.
The score continued to remain in the Hawks' favor as senior
Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) doubled to right field in the top of the seventh to bring in sophomore
Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) for the final 2-0 tally.
The Hawks dispersed seven hits in the contest while the Blue Devils registered three hits and one error in the loss.
Spriggs went 2-for-4 at bat while DeCosta and junior
Taylor Leonette (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) each went 1-for-3 at the plate. Cappello snagged the win in the circle as the junior pitcher gave up three hits, walked three batters and struck out three.
Junior Katelyn Dennis, junior Lauren Pixley and Yudin all went 1-for-3 at the plate. In the circle, sophomore Emily gave up four hits, one run and one error while walking two batters and striking out three to earn the loss.
