Women’s Lacrosse Hangs Tough in 8-6 Loss at Oswego

Box Score

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Looking for their first SUNYAC win this spring, the women's lacrosse team at the State University of New York at New Paltz came up just short on Tuesday, falling at SUNY Oswego 8-6 at Laker Turf Stadium.

Offensively for the Hawks (4-6, 0-4 SUNYAC), junior Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied three goals on six shots to lead the attack. Also providing goals for New Paltz were sophomore Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego), senior Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and freshman Emily Puciloski (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow).

Sophomore goalkeeper Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) suffered the loss in the cage, making four saves. Freshman Ashley Seiter (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Mount Sinai) and senior Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) both controlled a team-high four ground balls with Gottschalk causing two turnovers. Purtell gained possession of three draw controls.

In the first half, the Lakers (5-5, 3-1 SUNYAC) scored less than two minutes in before Puciloski notched the equalizer at 27:17 to tie the contest at 1-1.

Again the Lakers went ahead 2-1 but Massena tallied her first goal of the day at 15:59 to knot the game back up at 2-2. Following three straight Oswego goals, Wagner rippled the net with her score at 5:48 in the first half to get the Hawks within two, 5-3.

Trailing 6-3, Massena scored her second of the day and ninth of the season with only 49 ticks left in the first stanza to make the contest 6-4 in favor of Oswego at intermission.

Purtell opened up the scoring in the second half – thanks to a feed from senior Nicole Stackpole (North Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) – to make the contest a one-score affair (6-5) with 25:29 to play. However, two Laker scores pushed the deficit to three (8-5) until Massena completed the hat trick at 12:04 with an unassisted goal to get back within two, 8-6.

Down by just two, the Hawks were able to get off just two more shots in the remaining duration of the second half but came up empty.

New Paltz will now return home and host Buffalo State (5-6, 2-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
