Softball Splits SUNYAC Doubleheader with Geneseo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team won the first game of its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader with visiting SUNY Geneseo, 3-1, before falling to the Knights, 4-0, in the backend on Friday afternoon at Mary Gray Deane Field.

The Hawks (10-14, 6-4 SUNYAC) will move on to host The College at Brockport tomorrow at 11 a.m. and will honor its four seniors between games. Geneseo moves to 15-7, 5-3 SUNYAC.

Game One: New Paltz 3, Geneseo 1
A double to left center by senior Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) in the bottom of the first scored in two runs to put New Paltz ahead, 2-0, before sophomore Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) batted in Spriggs on a bunt single to make it a 3-0 game.

Geneseo earned its only run in the top of the third but New Paltz would fought off any other opportunities for the Knights to catch up, thus ensuring the victory.

Spriggs and junior Taylor Leonette (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) went 2-for-3 at the plate with one run. Spriggs finished the game with two RBI and a stolen base while sophomore Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) tallied one run for the Hawks.

Junior Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) scattered eight hits, walked one batter and struck out two in seven innings of work to take home the win in the circle.

Sophomore Dani Napoli was 2-for-3 at bat with one run and one RBI for the Knights. Sophomore Taylor Moore took the loss in the circle, giving up eight hits while walking one batter and striking out two.

Game Two: Geneseo 4, New Paltz 0
The Knights collected one run in the second and fourth innings to take hold of a 2-0 lead and would seal the win in the sixth innings with two more runs for the final 4-0 score.
