NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) recorded a hat-trick in the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team's 7-5 loss to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon at the North Turf Field.
The Hawks drop to 4-7, 0-5 SUNYAC and will pay a visit to SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday, April 18 for a 3 p.m. battle. Buffalo State improves to 6-6, 3-1 SUNYAC.
The Bengals held a 2-0 lead in the beginning of the first half but junior
Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) cut the deficit to one at the 15:20 mark off of a feed from junior
Caitlyn Morris (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). Buffalo State would rally to score one more time before the clock ran down to signal halftime.
Coming out of the break Wagner netted back-to-back goals to even the score to 3-all before Morris followed with a goal of her own to give the Hawks their first lead of the game. Wagner extended New Paltz's lead to 5-3 with 22:39 remaining on the clock but the Bengals rallied with four unanswered goals to take home the final 7-5 tally.
New Paltz outshot the Bengals, 19-17 and held a 33-27 edge in ground balls. Both teams ended the game with six free-position shots each.
Senior
Nicole Petrullo (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) scooped up six ground balls and caused six turnovers while freshman
Emily Puciloski (Rochester, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) also picked up six ground balls and caused five turnovers. Senior
Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn.) fired off four shots for the New Paltz offense and won three draw controls.
Sophomore
Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) made six stops in net and picked up three ground balls for the Hawks.
For Buffalo State, junior Christina Krowel notched four goals while junior Nina Schaefer had two goals and one assist. Senior Cassie Saint-Vil finished the game with four ground balls and three caused turnovers while sophomore Madz Wright won three draw controls.
Junior Elyse Stark took home the win in goal, making seven saves for the Bengals.
