NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team closed out its home season at Mary Gray Deane Field with a doubleheader win over visiting Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks took the first game, 5-3, before clinching the second game, 1-0, with a walk off single.
The Hawks improve to 14-14 and head out on the road to play SUNY Cortland on Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m. The Knights drop to 17-11.
For Tuesday's game, both teams wore yellow laces in support of pediatric cancer awareness.
Game One: New Paltz 5, Mt. St. Mary 3
The Knights held a 1-0 lead over the Hawks in the third inning but junior
Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) singled to bring home senior
Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) to tie up the game.
Mount Saint Mary responded in the fifth inning with two runs to take hold of the lead once again but the Hawks went on a rally of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) plated junior
Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) to trim the score to 3-2 before junior
Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) hit a two RBI double to give New Paltz the 5-3 lead.
Spriggs went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs while Fee also went 2-for-3 at bat and recorded one run. Perhacs finished the game going 1-for-2 at bat.
Cappello earned the win in the circle, giving up six hits while striking out four batters in five innings of work.
For the Knights, senior Shannon Sommer went 2-for-3 at bat with two runs while junior Cindy Connoly went 2-for-2 with two RBI and took home the loss in the circle, allowing nine hits, striking out seven batters and walking one.
Game Two: New Paltz 1, Mt. St. Mary 0
After six and half innings of a scoreless game, freshman
Julia DiSpigna (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) hit a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh to bring in Perhacs, handing the Hawks the 1-0 victory.
DiSpigna finished the game going 2-for-2 at bat while senior
Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Cappello took home her second win of the day in the circle, giving up two hits in seven innings of work and striking out three batters.
Connoly and freshman Emily Lang both went 1-for-2 at the plate for Mount Saint Mary while freshman Bridget Bennett earned the loss in the circle, giving up four hits while walking two batters and striking out five.
