POTSDAM, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team earned its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Wednesday afternoon as the Hawks edged out the host Bears, 8-7, in overtime.
The Hawks improve to 5-7, 1-5 SUNYAC and will return to action on Saturday, April 22 when they face SUNY Fredonia at 1 p.m. The Bears fall to 3-9, 0-5 SUNYAC.
This was a historic win for New Paltz as it is the first road SUNYAC win for the program since April 20, 2001, when the Hawks won at Buffalo State 12-6. New Paltz did defeat SUNY Oswego 11-9 on March 31, 2015 but this contest was played at a neutral site at Cazenovia College. New Paltz did not sponsor women's lacrosse from 2004-2008.
New Paltz held a 7-6 lead as time ran down in the second period but the Bears would push the game into overtime, scoring with 10 seconds remaining on the clock. Although it looked as if the game would continue with a second overtime period, senior
Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) netted a last second goal to conclude the contest and clinch the victory for the Hawks.
Potsdam held a 2-1 lead early in the game but the Hawks fought to tie up the score several times before the Bears cleared the field at halftime with a 4-3 advantage. However New Paltz would rally in the second period, keeping the score within reach before snagging its first lead (7-6) off of a goal by junior
Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).
The Hawks outshot the Bears, 19-10, while holding a 17-15 edge in ground balls while Potsdam won 12 draw controls to New Paltz's six.
Senior
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) led the offensive efforts with three goals while Massena and Gottschalk each concluded the day with two goals. Freshman
Ashley Seiter (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Mount Sinai) and senior
Nicole Petrullo each caused three turnovers for in the victory while senior
Nicole Stackpole (North Bellmore, N.Y./C.W. Mepham) won three draw controls.
Sophomore
Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) took home the win in goal, making three saves and scooping up a team-high four ground balls.
Sophomore Cayla O'Connor paced the Bears with three goals and won four draw controls with seniors Murphy Newman, Katie Lapinski, Alyssa Ferenczy and Mariah Pierce each adding a goal. Michaela Cole dished out two assists in the loss while sophomore Katie Longamore made five stops in goal and picked up six ground balls.
