OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team fell to host and conference foe SUNY Oswego, 9-2, in the opening game before dropping a 5-1 decision in the backend on Saturday afternoon at the Laker Softball Field.
The Hawks drop to 14-16, 8-6 SUNYAC and will look to bounce back when they travel to play SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 12 p.m. The Lakers improve to 13-13, 9-3 SUNYAC.
Game One: Oswego 9, New Paltz 2
The Lakers grabbed a quick 4-0 lead off of a grand slam in the bottom of the first before extending their advantage to 6-0 in the bottom of the third.
After several innings of no scoring from either team, the Hawks made their move in the top of the sixth as senior
Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) hit an RBI double to place New Paltz on the scoreboard. Junior
Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) added the Hawks' second run of the game, hitting a single to plate Spriggs for a 6-2 game.
However the Lakers would respond in the bottom of the inning with two homeruns to bring home three runners, securing the final 9-2 tally.
Spriggs hit 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI while junior
Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) went 1-for-2.
Cappello finished the game going 1-for-3 with one RBI and took home the loss in the circle as the junior pitcher gave up 10 hits, walked two batters and struck out three.
For the Lakers, senior Ashley Lyman, freshman Joelle Nesci and freshman Jessica Roe all went 2-for-3 at the plate with Nesci, freshman Rebecca Vilchez and sophomore Erin Sweeney each recording a homerun.
Vilchez earned the win in the circle, scattering five hits, walking one batter and striking out two in seven innings of work.
Game Two: Oswego 5, New Paltz 1
The Hawks managed to score a run in the top of the sixth as freshman
Nicole DePaola (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) capitalized on a wild pitch to reach home but the Lakers would ultimately take home the 5-1 victory.
Freshman
Julia DiSpigna (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-3 at bat while sophomore
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) went 1-for-2.
Senior
Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack) earned the loss in the circle, giving up five hits while walking two batters.
Sweeney, Lyman, Roe and senior Katie Helseden all went 2-for-3 at the plate for Oswego. Roe took home the win in the circle, allowing just four hits while Vilchez earned her second save of the season by giving up one run and one hit.
