FREDONIA, N.Y. – Senior
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) led the women's lacrosse team at the State University of New York at New Paltz with four goals on Saturday but the Hawks fell at host SUNY Fredonia 15-8 in SUNYAC action at University Stadium.
With the defeat, the Hawks fall to 5-8, 1-6 SUNYAC and will conclude the season by hosting No. 19 Brockport next Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The Blue Devils move to 3-11, 2-4 SUNYAC.
Wagner finished the day with four goals and one assist for six points. Junior
Kayla Massena (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied two goals and five draw controls while senior
Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) distributed two assists.
Sophomore
Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego) scored while senior
Nicole Stackpole (North Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) tacked on a goal of her own to wrap up the offense for New Paltz.
Sophomore netminder
Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) played all 60 minutes and made six saves on 21 shots.
For Fredonia, Samantha Spiess led all players with seven goals and two assists.
In the first half, the Hawks trailed by one goal on two different occasions but fell behind 6-3 at halftime.
Wagner tacked on a goal in the opening minutes of the second half to bring the Hawks within two, 6-4, but Fredonia would outscore New Paltz 9-4 the remainder of the contest.
