TROY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team closed out its non-conference season with a doubleheader win over host Sage College on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks took game one, 1-0, before claiming a 6-3 triumph in game two.
The Hawks improve to 17-17 and will conclude their regular season on Saturday, April 29 when they take on Catskill Cup and SUNYAC rival SUNY Oneonta at 12 p.m. Both teams enter the weekend tied for second place in the league at 9-7 overall. Sage falls to 17-17.
Game One: New Paltz 1, Sage 0
New Paltz landed its lone run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as junior
Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) touched home off of a single from sophomore
Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen).
In the bottom of the sixth, the Gators landed a runner in scoring position to tie up the score with two outs, but junior
Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) got the Hawks out of the inning as she dove for a popped-up bunt to keep New Paltz ahead.
Although Sage would find a similar opportunity in the bottom of the seventh, excellent fielding by New Paltz secured the 1-0 win.
Perhacs went 1-for-1 with one run while Fee was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Cappello earned her 13
th win in the circle, as the junior pitcher scattered two hits across seven innings while striking out five batters.
Game Two: New Paltz 6, Sage 3
With the game locked at a 2-2 score, senior
Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) knocked a grand slam over the fence in the top of the sixth to extend the Hawks' lead to 6-2. Although the Gators managed to score one more run in the bottom of the inning, New Paltz would ultimately claim the victory.
Senior
Megan Carbia (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) had a strong showing as she went 2-for-3 with two runs while DeCosta was 1-for-3 with one run and four RBI. Cappello also went 1-for-3 with one run and took home her second win of the day in the pitching circle, giving up two hits while walking two batters and striking out two.
The Hawks again made some defensive gems in game two as freshman
Julia DiSpigna (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) made an over-the-shoulder grab in deep center in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the fifth, Fee made a fine play, catching a shallow ball down the right field line to secure the out.
