NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite holding a 2-0 lead early in the first half, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team ultimately fell 20-2 to No. 19 The College at Brockport in its home and season finale on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to today's contest, the Hawks celebrated the careers of the five graduating seniors:
Alexa Criollo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills),
Nicole Gottschalk (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury),
Nicole Petrullo (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow),
Nicole Stackpole (North Bellmore, N.Y./C.W. Mepham) and
Melissa Wagner (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley).
The Hawks conclude the 2017 season 5-9 overall, the most wins since the 2012 season when the Hawks went 7-10, and 1-7 SUNYAC. Brockport improves to 18-1, 8-0 SUNYAC, and will host the semifinal rounds of the 2017 SUNYAC Tournament on Friday, May 5 having earned the No. 1 seed.
Freshman
Jennifer O'Leary (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and junior
Caitlyn Morris (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) netted a goal each for New Paltz before the Hawks gave up nine unanswered goals in the first half and 11 in the second period for the final 20-2 tally.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Hawks, 30-8, and held an 18-5 advantage in draw controls but both teams picked up 19 ground balls apiece.
Morris and Wagner each fired off two shots for the New Paltz offense. Freshman
Jahna Beiling (Rochester, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) scooped up a team-high five ground balls and caused six turnovers while junior
Rachael Purtell (Minetto, N.Y./Oswego Free Academy), freshman
Ashley Seiter (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Mount Sinai) and Petrullo picked up three ground balls each.
Stackpole won three draw controls for the day while sophomore
Kendra Dansereau (Chesapeake, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) turned in two ground balls, two caused turnovers and made six saves in goal in the loss.
Sophomore Heather Conklin paced the Brockport offense with four goals while sophomore Hannah Cullen and senior Kelly Wall netted three goals each. Three goalies made an appearance for the Golden Eagles with junior Sara Shaddock earning the win, making one stop in the crease.
