Justine O'Reilly scored twice as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team defeated Morrisville State College 5-0 in its first SUNYAC matchup of the season on Wednesday afternoon.
"Today was a good confidence builder for us going into the rest of SUNYAC play this season," Hawks coach
Shanna Szablinski said. "Overall the girls played really well and we're looking forward to playing on Saturday."
SUNY New Paltz improved to 2-3, while the Mustangs also now hold a record of 2-3.
Junior
Samantha Ackerman opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with her second goal of the season, and the 1-0 score stood through halftime.
O'Reilly scored her first goal of the game at the 47:07 mark and senior
Hayley Kim notched her first goal of the season off an assist from junior
Serena Capsello shortly afterwards in the 51st minute.Â
Capsello then scored a goal of her own at the 52:23 mark and O'Reilly followed with her second goal of the game in the 59th minute.
Senior
Megan Gangewere made four stops in the cage to preserve the shutout, her first of the season.Â
The Hawks out-shot Morrisville 40-7 and held a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners. Kim registered 11 shots on the day, while O'Reilly was right behind with nine, including a team-high five on goal.Â
The Hawks next travel to the University of Rochester for a non conference match up on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. Â
