The State University of New York at New Paltz is looking to extend its winning streak Saturday and Tuesday, when it hits the road to take on SUNY Oneonta (9-4, 4-2) and Oswego State (4-9, 1-5).
The last time the Hawks (7-5 overall, 3-3 SUNYAC) lost was on Dec. 9 against the Red Dragons in tight, 54-52, game in the Hawk Center. They're looking to avenge that loss this time around, and with doing so will even themselves up with SUNY Oneonta in the conference standings.
"It's definitely a big game. Every game is a big game, so winning it would be really huge for us," said SUNY New Paltz junior guard
Taylor Howell. "We're definitely on our come-up and coming back for everybody that we didn't play really well against the first semester. So I am really excited having the chance to go after them so soon after we lost that game. We've just been able to get back at those people that we've played against and I'm excited to just go again, and we're going to kill them this weekend."
The first time around the two teams met, it was a back-and-forth game with neither the Hawks nor Red Dragons shooting the ball particularly well. But ultimately, SUNY Oneonta were propelled by an 8-0 fourth quarter start to finish the game victorious.
"To limit them offensively, just … great communication, just having awareness on the court, focus and being able to finish out games," said SUNY New Paltz sophomore guard
Sandi Harris. "Sometimes we get caught in the third quarter, letting them close the gap and so we just need to keep the gap wide and finish the game efficiently.
The Red Dragons are coming off a 1-1 weekend against SUNY Cortland and the Lakers. They bounced back from a 23-point loss at home against the Red Dragons with a 21-point victory over Oswego State.
So far this season SUNY Oneonta has averaged 56.5 points per game, while keeping opponent's just under 53 points.
Alexa Amalbert, Madeline Frank and Leanne Corso have led the team offensively averaging about nine points per game apiece. Frank paces the Red Dragons with about eight boards per game, while Amalbert averages a team-high 3.3 assists a contest.
"We're going to have to have really good focus and great communication," Harris said. "We're going to need to have great ball movement and make sure to get it inside out a lot. We just got to keep progressing and doing what we've been working on in practice."
After splitting their series with the Lakers last season, the Hawks are hoping for a sweep this time around after defeating them Jan. 5, 58-48.
Oswego State has struggled at home this season, winning just once on their home floor all year. However, the Lakers played SUNY New Paltz tough down the stretch in their first meeting, erasing a 20-point deficit to get within eight with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter.
Marion Dietz and
Lindsay Bettke ended up leading the Hawks offensively in the eventual 10-point victory, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.
