Looking to sweep its sixth-straight weekend in a row, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team will travel to SUNY Geneseo for its last set of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play matches.
The Hawks will match-up with SUNY Fredonia (16-7 overall, 5-1 SUNYAC) Friday, returning Saturday to play fellow SUNYAC undefeated, SUNY Geneseo (17-7 overall, 6-0 SUNYAC), and Plattsburgh State (6-18 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC).
"We're all playing for a quality seed in the tournament this weekend," said Hawks coach
Matt Giufre. "I expect a lot of great volleyball, and really the team that plays the most consistent is going to win."
This past weekend, SUNY New Paltz moved its winning streak to six games, beating Rowan University 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-19), Morrisville State College 3-1 (25-23, 29-25, 25-27, 27-25) and Bard College 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-15).
"Coming off last weekend, we really just learned to be in attack mode because we're best when we're aggressive," said Hawks junior outside hitter
Madison Van Pelt. "We're definitely very confident, and excited to see the outcome of this weekend."
Coming into the last pool play series at 21-4 overall, and tied for first in the SUNYAC at 6-0 with the Knights, SUNY New Paltz looks to seal the first seed in the conference tournament this weekend.
Playing two teams at the top of the standings to end the conference schedule will be no easy task for the Hawks, who lost to both Fredonia State and SUNY Geneseo in last years regular season 3-1 (16-25, 25-15, 20-25, 14-25) and 2-3 (27-25, 19-25, 13-25, 25-23, 7-15), respectively.
Fortunately, the Blue Devils' only loss in SUNYAC play for the 2018 campaign comes from The College at Brockport, 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 16-25, 16-18), a team the Hawks beat earlier this season, 3-0 (28-26, 25-14, 25-21)
SUNY New Paltz will look to capture a top seed in the SUNYAC tournament starting Friday, at 5 p.m. against Fredonia State. Saturday matches begin at 12 p.m. with SUNY Geneseo, followed by a 2:30 p.m. meet with Plattsburgh State.
"We're hoping to become the top team this weekend," said Hawks sophomore outside hitter
Julie Greenspan. "This is the biggest weekend of the year, and we just have to play our game."
