Entering its second weekend of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team sits at the top of the SUNYAC standings, tied for first with SUNY Geneseo.
At 15-4, the Hawks will contend with SUNY Oneonta (7-11 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) Friday, then return to the Hawk Center Saturday for Oswego State (12-6 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC) and SUNY Potsdam (7-10 overall, 1-2 SUNYAC).
"It's always exciting when the games tend to mean a bit more," said Hawks coach Matt Giufre. "We had a good first conference weekend, but we're certainly not satisfied. This weekend's an opportunity to raise where we're at, and pursue the postseason."
Prior to its first loss since Sept. 12 Tuesday, losing to Williams College 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 22-25), the Hawks went undefeated in their first weekend of SUNYAC pool play. SUNY New Paltz swept Buffalo State, defending conference champion The College at Brockport and SUNY Cortland.
The Hawks also fared well in 2017 against their three opponents this weekend, beating SUNY Oneonta 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-17, 28-26), Oswego State 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-20) and SUNY Potsdam 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-16).
Coming off of its loss against the Ephs, SUNY New Paltz has worked heavily on its defense during practice throughout the week, which senior setter Meredith Dignan believes will play a huge factor going into their matchups this weekend.
"We're trying to work on serve-receive reps and defense reps to improve in that area," Dignan said. "We were out-played [Tuesday], but they out-played us in things that we can control. When's it's SUNYAC play, it's more competitive, so we're really excited."
The Hawks will face off against SUNY Oneonta at 5 p.m. Friday and then return at 12 p.m. Saturday to take on Oswego State, followed by a 5 p.m. match with SUNY Potsdam.
