SUNY New Paltz Women's Basketball Secures No. 4 Seed With Win Over Plattsburgh State
Box Score Plattsburgh, NY — With a home playoff berth on the line, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (16-9 overall, 12-6 SUNYAC) stepped up and had a dominating performance against Plattsburgh State (8-17, 6-12) Saturday, ending the regular season with a commanding, 85-52 victory.
The win, combined with a loss by The College at Brockport, secured the Hawks a No. 4 seed. They will face the No. 5 Golden Eagles, who they split with during the regular season, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
"Brockport is tough," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Jamie Seward. "They really beat us up inside, and it's going to be a challenge for us for sure. Plus, their best shooter was out last weekend and is now back, so that is going to make it even more difficult."
The Hawks ended the season strong with a sweep over SUNY Potsdam and the Cardinals, who opened up Saturday's game with a 13-10 lead into the second quarter.
SUNY New Paltz took over in the second quarter, holding Plattsburgh State to eight points in the period and just 29.6 percent from the floor (8-27), including 7.7 percent (1-13) from 3-point range.
Meanwhile, the Hawks' offense continued its hot hand from Friday's triumphant 31-point victory over the Bears.
Rachel Simon once again led the charge, scoring 12 points in the half, while finishing with a team-high 16 points in 26 minutes after shooting 50 percent from the field.
SUNY New Paltz out-scored the Cardinals 32-8 in the second quarter and took a 21-point lead into the break, which ballooned to 33 entering the fourth quarter.
"We shot the ball really well in the second quarter and that makes a lot of things look good," said Seward. "But overall, we are please with the effort today and on the weekend as a whole."
The Hawks led by as many as 41 in the game, and had four different players in double-figure points including, Simon,
Marion Dietz (12),
Sandi Harris (12) and
Lindsay Bettke (10).
SUNY New Paltz also held the advantage on the boards (46-41), and won the turnover battle (18-10), while getting 34 points from their bench, led by Harris and
Demi Herasme (eight points, eight rebounds).
Since coming off a poor outing against The College at Brockport and SUNY Geneseo last weekend, the Hawks ended their regular season with two of its most convincing outings of the year. They hope to bring that momentum into Tuesday against a tough Golden Eagles team.
"Perhaps the losses last weekend sharpened our focus and coming off two wins is a nice way to head into the postseason," Seward added. "However, the postseason is a different animal altogether and it will be interesting to see how our players respond."
