After going 3-1 in the first weekend of its regular season, the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team will spend spring break in Clermont, Florida, facing 10 different teams from March 18-23 in the PFX THE Spring Games Tournament.
"Florida is always an important trip," Hawks senior outfielder
Taylor Leonette said. "It's big for us to get some extra wins under our belt before conference play starts up."
The team's first matchup will be against Manchester University, followed by a game with Hamilton College later that day. SUNY New Paltz will face Bowdoin College and Calvin College on March 19, Washington and Jefferson College and St. Lawrence University on March 21, Worcester State University and Hope College on March 22 and No. 10 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Tufts University on March 23.
The Hawks struggled during their spring break games last season, winning just two of eight. SUNY New Paltz head coach
Samantha Miller explained that was due to the team still adjusting to having her as the head coach and things should be different this season.
"We want to build upon what we already started this season," Miller said. "Last year at this time the team was still getting used to my style of coaching. This year we're past that point."
The Hawks look to continue their hot hitting, as the team scored 38 runs in their first four games and currently boast a .405 team batting average.
SUNY New Paltz began its season with a 16-6 win over Allegheny College on March 9, followed by a 12-4 victory over Hunter College and a thrilling 5-4 win in extra innings against SUNY Cobleskill the following day. After surrendering the game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning and the go-ahead run in the eighth, Hawks senior pitcher
Lauren Cappello redeemed herself with a walk-off single that drove in two runs and secured the team's third win of the weekend.
"We stuck together as a team," SUNY New Paltz freshman outfielder
Katie Conrad said. "We had some tough situations, but we stuck together and got through them. We just want to keep that momentum going into the Florida trip."
