SUNY New Paltz Women's Lacrosse Fall in Overtime Against Fredonia State

| By:
Box Score New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team out-matched Fredonia State in nearly every statistical category Saturday in the Hawks' home final on the North Turf Field.

SUNY New Paltz out-shot (50-26) the Blue Devils, out-possessed them on the draw (22-11), picked up more ground balls (39-16) and won the turnover battle (25-19), but Fredonia State's goalie Nicole Burrows kept her team in it throughout the day and made 28 saves to help push her team to a 16-15 overtime win over the Hawks.

"There were 50 shots and 43 on goal. The goalie did an outstanding job obviously, 28 saves. But, when you get 50 shots you should be winning games," said SUNY New Paltz coach Keith Detelj. "[We overcame] all but one obstacle of finishing a game out when they had the chance to do so. I think that is a learning experience for them."

The score was tied six times in a convoluted game that took nearly three hours to complete due to some confusion between the referees with certain calls on the field. The constant stoppage of play led to some back-and-forth runs between the Hawks and Blue Devils.team_huddle

Initially up 4-2 to open up the contest, Fredonia State came back to regain the lead with four straight goals midway through the first half. Caitlyn Morris assisted Amy Hofer to tie the game up at five and end the surge for SUNY New Paltz, but the Blue Devils answered with consecutive goals.

Fredonia State won the ensuing draw and with 28 seconds left, Alxis Skowron found an opening and tried putting a shot past Hawks goalie Nicole Sheintul (seven saves). Sheintul made an impressive foot save and quickly got the ball out for the clear, finding Jennifer O'Leary near the midfield line. With time ticking down in the half, O'Leary ran the ball down, passed it to Morris and found an open Hofer in front of net, who buried her shot to cut the score, 8-7, with 11 seconds to spare.

The Blue Devils (1-12 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC) kept the lead until 13 minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the seconds half. Hofer forced a turnover on the Hawks' ride, checking the stick of Madeline Haney to force the ball loose. Morris picked up the ground ball and got it back to Hofer, who netted the fast-break goal to put SUNY New Paltz up, 11-10.

Hofer's goal was a part of a four-goal run by SUNY New Paltz, which started with a free position goal by O'Leary and capped off with an unassisted goal by Keydy Espinoza.

The Hawks held on to a three-goal lead with four minutes remaining after O'Leary found Espinoza for her second goal of the day. But, Casey Villagomez won the next four draws for the Blue Devils and took it herself to net, single-handedly chipping away at the lead.

SUNY New Paltz clung to its goal advantage for nearly three minutes with a long offensive possession. The Hawks milked the clock and still got off two shots on Burrows with Hofer working to get consecutive rebounds to retain her team's possession.

With 32 seconds lef Espinoza was awarded a free position and tried placing her shot past Burrows, but once again the senior came up with the stop. This time, Fredonia State picked up the ground ball and ran it down field past the restraining line before calling a timeout with 28 seconds remaining.

Villagomez started with the ball out of the timeout and ran directly at goal, earning a free position from the referees after the Hawks' defense swarmed as soon as she touched the arc. Villagomez capitalized on the free position and tied the game at 15 with 12 seconds left to force overtime.

A minute to go in overtime the Hawks were hit with a yellow card in the midfield. Fredonia State immediately took advantage of the man-up opportunity, as Emily Ellis found Haney for the goal to seal the win.

"Dealing with pressure and taking what we trained to do in those scenarios and making sure that we see it through in the way we train upon them," said Detelj of what his team can take from the game. "There is going to be distractions in certain games and late in games it is very important that we stick to our game plan during those times."senior_photo_with_coaches_and_parents

Hofer led SUNY New Paltz with eight goals on 18 shot attempts. She also added four ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover. O'Leary finished with three goals on three attempts and Espinoza added two goals, one assist, four ground balls, one caused turnover and a team-high seven draw controls. Morris – who was honored, along with fellow seniors Colleen Jones and Kayla Massena prior to the game in a brief Senior Day ceremony – led the team with five assists to go along with a goal and five ground balls.

The Hawks, whose record bumps to 5-8 overall and 1-6 in SUNYAC, caps off the season on the road against The College at Brockport April 28.
