The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team made its fourth-straight appearance at the SUNYAC tournament in 2018, earning a fourth-seed after finishing 12-6 in conference.
The Hawks, who ended the season at 17-10 overall, defeated The College at Brockport at home in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament and set up a re-match against top-seed SUNY Geneseo, which they defeated in the previous two conference championship games.
However, the two-time defending SUNYAC champs couldn't get the best of the Knights this time around, as SUNY Geneseo defeated SUNY New Paltz, 63-57, to advance to the conference title game where it beat SUNY Oneonta to win the tournament.
Freshman
Amanda Skopetos was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team after putting up 20 points and 10 rebounds in her first two career playoff games, while juniors
Rachel Simon and
Lindsay Bettke each earned First-Team All-SUNYAC selections following their season's efforts.
Simon, a junior transfer from Caldwell University, led the team in field goals made (134), 3-pointers made (65), 3-point percentage (40.1), free-throw percentage (84.1) points (386), points per game (14.1), assists (63) and steals (51). Bettke, who missed four games due to injury, still put up solid numbers despite missing time. She followed Simon with 107 field goals made, 45 3-pointers made, 12.5 points per game, 63 assists, and 40 steals.
Marion Dietz was the only other player besides Simon to start all 27 games. She led the team in minutes played (914), while also averaging 11.5 points and four rebounds per game, while adding 63 assists and 36 steals on the season.
Madison Van Pelt led the Hawks on the boards, totaling 183 to average seven rebounds per game, while
Paige Niemeyer paced SUNY New Paltz in blocked shots with 15, despite playing in just 17 games after suffering a season-ending injury earlier in the year.
With no seniors featured on the roster in 2017-18, SUNY New Paltz is primed to make a run at another SUNYAC title and NCAA tournament berth in 2019.Â
