Box Score Buffalo, NY -- After a dominating win over The State University of New York at Fredonia Friday, the SUNY New Paltz men's basketball team secured its second victory of the weekend in a nail-biting match against Buffalo State Saturday, 66-64.
The Hawks (overall 9-7, conference 4-5) entered the game eager to continue the success they established the previous day, beating the Blue Devils, 79-59. SUNY New Paltz shot 42.9 percent from the field (27-63) as opposed to the Bengals 39.5 percent (23-64).
"We had great energy to start the game and got off to a good start," said SUNY New Paltz coach Keith Kenney. "[We] need to start well on the road."
Scott Reisert scored two 3-pointers within the first two minutes of the game, putting the Hawks up six and setting the tone for the rest of the game. Reisert shot 64 percent from the field (9-14), leading SUNY New Paltz with 20 points on the day. The Hawks maintained this lead until the 11th minute where Buffalo State (overall 3-11, conference 1-7) tied up the score, 16-16. The stalemate was short lived after Reisert scored a layup off an offensive rebound. Nick Paquette sank two 3-pointers in the following minutes, and multiple shots by Isaiah Bien-Aise kept SUNY New Paltz ahead as the game reached halftime, 36-32.
The Hawks sustained the advantage until the 11th minute of the second period as the Bengals scored a 3-pointer to steal the lead by one. Offensive efforts by Reisert and Tristan Wissemann put SUNY New Paltz back up by three with eight minutes left in the game. The last few minutes of second half was riddled with fouls by Buffalo State in efforts to slow the clock, however their efforts were in vain; Wissemann hit 3-of-4 free throws, bringing the score to 64-57.
The Bengals fought back to tie the score in the last 40 seconds, threatening to send the game into overtime. With two seconds left, Buffalo State sent the ball out of bounds off an inbound pass, giving the Hawks possession of the ball, allowing Reisert to score the winning two points on a buzzer beater layup.
"Momentum is only as good as how you play your next game. We needed road wins and we got them," said Kenney. "Most importantly I am happy for the guys to see their pure joy in celebrating. They deserve it."
