Oswego, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team suffered its second conference loss of the season Saturday at the hands of hosting Oswego State, 2-1.
The Hawks (8-5 overall, 2-3 SUNYAC) came off an exciting 1-0 victory over SUNY Cortland Friday and entered Saturday's contest confident in earning another three points in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings. They did well to control the pace of play and held a slight advantage on opportunities on frame, 7-6 with each team recording 12 total shots in the game.
The Lakers (8-4-1, 3-1-1) went up in the 34th minute following a Kyle Scalzo goal, assisted by Kieran Gilroy, which stood until halftime. SUNY New Paltz knotted up the score shortly into the second period, as
Kevin Doorley recorded his third goal of the season after putting away a penalty shot past Lakers keeper Brian Terra.
The Hawks saw solid chances to get in front, firing 10 shots in the second half alone, but couldn't finish in their offense end. The score stayed tied until the 83rd minute off a corner by Oswego.
Marc DePasquale made the initial save on the shot from Gilroy, but Anthony Paris was there to put away the go-ahead score.
"Unfortunately we had a couple of breakdowns that led to the goal and multiple mistakes are always tough to overcome," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Kyle Clancy. "It was actually our first goal we've given up all year on a set piece and it will be one we definitely learn from."
The Hawks had opportunities to equalize once again down the stretch with Maltes,
Brandon Davenport,
Luke Dole and
Coltan Goodwine all having a look on frame, but they could not connect and the score stood.
Philip Varner led SUNY New Paltz with three shots, followed by Doorley and Dole with two. DePasquale finished with four saves, while Terra came up with six stops for the Lakers.

"There was not much lacking from our guys. They honestly played very well and I thought we were in control of a large part of the game," Clancy said. "Oswego is a dangerous team in transition and they created some good chances that way, but overall it came down to our execution in the final third and we just missed the opportunities we had. Credit to their keeper for some good saves."
Despite the loss, Clancy was pleased with how his team competed over the weekend. With the split against the Red Dragons and Lakers, the Hawks sit with six points in the SUNYAC and sixth in the standings.
They are back in action Oct. 18 and 19 to begin a two-week home stand against SUNY Geneseo and The College at Brockport.
"While we missed out on valuable points, we took a good step forward this weekend and will continue to improve to be ready for the games next week," said Clancy.
