SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Allow Five Unanswered Second Half Goals and Fall 6-2 to Geneseo

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team were up one goal at the half against visiting SUNY Geneseo Friday at the South Turf Field. The Hawks (8-6 overall, 2-4 SUNYAC) had out-shot the Knights (6-7-1, 2-4-1) at the break and created numerous chances as the first 45 minutes winded down to add to their lead. However in the second half, Geneseo rallied to tie the score and the momentum quickly shifted with the visitors piling on four more to hand SUNY New Paltz a 6-2 loss.

"We just got physically out-matched," said Hawks coach Kyle Clancy. "We lost every one-v-one battle. Defended extremely poorly. They just out-worked us, out-played us and they earned it."

The Hawks didn't take long to get on the scoreboard to open up the game. High pressuring on a Knights goal kick allowed SUNY New Paltz to win a 50-50 ball, which was immediately played through to Ryan Hilliard, who found himself one-v-one with the keeper. Hilliard poked his shot past Geneseo goalkeeper Will Price as he came out to cut off the angle to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Knights tied the score at one in the 16th minute off a corner. Ariel Samoohy played the cross to the top of the six-yard box and found the head of Caleb Murthy who guided his shot over the reach of Hawks goalkeeper Marc DePasquale for the goal.

SUNY New Paltz owned the final 20 minutes of the half and managed to re-gain the lead. Gabriel Cruz worked the end line, beating his defender to get off a left-footed cross toward the back post, finding Brandon Davenport who soared over his defender to re-direct the ball back toward goal. Kevin Doorley got on the end to make sure the ball found the back of the net to secure the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

SUNY New Paltz nearly tacked on another in the last 30 seconds before the break, as Doorley whipped a pass in the middle of the six for an open Cruz, who got up and got his head on the ball, but couldn't guide his shot in the net and missed just wide.

Doorley again narrowly assisted on another goal to open up the second half. He dribbled end line and played a ball across to an open Philip Varner running in toward the edge of the six-yard box. Varner got on the other end, but couldn't place it past Price who made the save and pushed the ball out of play to end the threat.

The tables started to turn midway through the half following a Knights throw deep in the Hawks' defensive third. Geneseo threw a ball long toward a scrum in the middle of the box. The ball bounced back to the Knights' Cameron Houser who took a touch and ripped a shot at the edge of the six out of the reach of DePasquale.

Geneseo then piled on from there. In the 71 st minute, Owen Frank won the ball on the far side, beating his man and found space where Houser capitalized and put away his first of the year. Justin Arliotta then worked the left flank, dripped past three Hawks defenders and slotted his shot past DePasquale six minutes later to cushion the Knights lead. Ariel Samoohy and Frank then tacked on two more in the 82nd and 8 th minute to solidify the 6-2 outcome.

SUNY New Paltz out-shot Geneseo in the game, 16-11 with each team totaling nine shots on goal. Luke Dole led the Hawks with four shots, followed by Maltes and Doorley with three apiece. DePasquale ended the game with three saves.

SUNY New Paltz will look to re-group Saturday when it hosts defending SUNYAC champions The College at Brockport on the South Turlf Field at 1 p.m.

"I mean there's nothing for me to say," Clancy said. "They saw what happened… tomorrow is a new day and we just got to be better."

Saturday's contest will also be the annual Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. Game, which supports veteran students at SUNY New Paltz. There will be a $5 entry fee for all attending, except for SUNY students with I.D.
