SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Loss Against Brockport

New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team took its third-straight loss Saturday, as the Hawks were unable to find the back of the net for the duration of the game. The visiting Golden Eagles of The College at Brockport scored midway through the first half and hung on to hand the hosts at 1-0 loss at South Turf Field.

SUNY New Paltz (8-7 overall, 2-5 SUNYAC) looked sharp to start the game, as its work rate up top curated some chances in Brockport's defensive third. The Hawks totaled six shots in the first half, including four corners, but couldn't convert on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles (8-6-2, 3-4-1) tallied the first and only goal of the game in the 30th minute. A cross played in by Brockport was cleared back to Nolan Byrnes, who took a touch and ripped a shot from about 35 yards away that sailed into the far corner of the goal out of the reach of Hawks goalkeeper Marc DePasquale, for the score.

An uneven first half for SUNY New Paltz was met with a lackluster second half of play. The Golden Eagles nearly scored again just two minutes into the second period, as a cross deflected off a Hawks defender and hit off the cross bar and out of play. Five minutes later, Brockport's Matthew Stefaniw got through and had a one-v-one with DePasquale, but the junior keeper came out, cut off the angle and made the stop with center back Pedro Marshall coming through to block the second attempt and clear away the threat.

The Hawks' best chances came back-to-back midway through the half. Ryan Hiliard worked his way toward the top of the box and sent a pass across to Coltan Goodwine just inside the 18. The senior took a touch and launched a shot destined for the back of the net, but the attempt was inches too high and went out of play. About a minute later, Spencer Ryczek was aggressive building up the flank from the right back position. He beat his man and found some space inside the edge of the box and tried lofting a shot toward the far corner, which narrowly missed the inside of the frame, but like Goodwine's attempt sailed just high.

SUNY New Paltz earned some long throws deep in the Golden Eagles' defensive half, but couldn't convert the opportunities to anything dangerous on frame and as a result was shut out for just the third time this season.

Kevin Doorley led the Hawks with three shots, followed by Hilliard and Ryan Stevens with two each. DePasquale ended with six saves in the game.

With the back-to-back losses to Brockport Saturday and SUNY Geneseo Saturday, SUNY New Paltz fell to eighth in the conference standings with six points. The Hawks conclude the season at home next weekend with playoffs hopes on the line against SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State with the latter already securing a post-season berth.
