The State University of New York at New Paltz is looking to end a three game losing skid Tuesday when it hosts St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a 5 p.m. game in the Hawk Center.
The Hawks (2-4 overall, 0-2 SUNYAC) had a rough three-game stretch, falling to SUNY Maritime, SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh State all by double-figures. They have allowed their opposition to shoot a combined 49.2 percent from the field and struggled with foul trouble down the stretch in those outings. Their losing streak culminated in their worst offensive night of the season, scoring just 60 points on 36.8 percent shooting with just one player in double-figure points.
SUNY New Paltz hopes to turn things around against the Bears, who enter the contest 4-2 overall and are coming off their first loss after winning four-straight games. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn most recently played Yeshiva at home Dec. 3 and took a rough, 85-51 loss to its conference rival.
The Bears are averaging 75 points per game, while shooting less than 40 percent as a team. Defensively they've allowed 85 points per game, while allowing the opposition to shoot 53.1 percent from the floor.
Senior forward Stephane Etheart leads the team offensively, averaging 18.5 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game, while shooting 42 percent from the field. Senior Dimitri Sirakis follows with 15.6 points, while shooting 44 percent from the field, including nearly 40 percent from behind the arc.Â
The Hawks are 2-1 thus far in non-conference play, picking their two wins against Baruch College and Farmingdale State to open up the year. Through their first six games, the team has averaged almost 78 points per game, the most in more than three decades. However, they've struggled on the defensive end, allowing 84 points against on 45.5 percent shooting from the floor.Â
Freshman
RJ Meyers-Turner leads SUNY New Paltz offensively with 16.2 points per game, shooting a team-best 47.7 percent on the floor with at least 20 attempts, while also netting a team-high 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from 3-point range. Junior
Jake Passaretti follows with 13.5 points per game, shooting 40.3 percent from the field, including 44.4 percent from behind the arc with a team-best 3.8 assists a contest. Sophomore
Isaiah Bien-Aise is the team's best rebounder, averaging about nine per game, while adding 8.8 points a contest.
