SUNY New Paltz Women's Basketball Wins 11th-Straight, Beating The College at Brockport, 69-53

| By:
Box Score Brockport, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team collected its 11th-straight victory Friday after taking over in the second half on the road against The College at Brockport, earning a 69-53 victory.

"Brockport came out more aggressive than us. Every time we got ourselves into the game, we backed off and let them take control again. Give them credit, they came to play," said Hawks coach Jamie Seward. "We played about a quarter and a half and that's not going to be good enough moving forward."

It was a tight first quarter between SUNY New Paltz (15-4 overall, 11-1 SUNYAC) and the Golden Eagles (8-11, 6-6) with the Hawks taking a slight 18-16 lead into the second quarter.

SUNY New Paltz struggled finding the bottom of the hoop in the second period, which allowed Brockport to gain an eight-point lead. It took until 3 minutes, 38 seconds remaining for the Hawks to score their first points of the quarter with Marion Dietz breaking the drought after sinking a pair of free throws.

Taylor Howell netted SUNY New Paltz's first basket of the second, burying a long-ranged 3 with two minutes remaining, which kick-started a 9-0 run to end the half. Dietz was the catalyst in the run, scoring two points, while adding two rebounds, a steal and a caused turnover in the remaining two minutes before the break.

Following another pair of made free throws with about a minute to go, Dietz earned the ball back on a charge call underneath the basket. Paige Niemeyer then capitalized on the offensive end, burying a pull-up jumper around the key to give SUNY New Paltz back the lead, which it never relinquished the rest of the game.

"We settled for some deep 3's too early in the shot clock, some contested shots and shots off the dribble that we could have done better," Seward said. "Then, they did some things the second half defensively to take Lindsay [Bettke] and Rachel [Simon] out of their normal comfort zones. Fortunately, we had a much better energy level to start the second half and Marion really came out aggressive, attacked the basket and knocked down some open shots she got because of the way they were defending Lindsay and Rachel."

The Hawks took over in the third quarter, out-scoring Brockport, 26-13, in the period. Dietz led the way, netting 16 of her team-high 24 points in the quarter, which helped SUNY New Paltz build a 14-point cushion heading into the fourth. The lead ballooned to as many as 19 midway through the fourth quarter for the Hawks, with most of their points coming off the bench.

Simon and Madison Van Pelt followed Dietz offensively with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Simon added four rebounds and two assists, while Van Pelt also chipped in with four boards, one assist and one steal.

"Maddie was more offensive minded when she got the ball and I've really been on her about that for a while now, so that was good to see," Seward said.

Heading into the matchup SUNY New Paltz put an emphasis on attacking the basket, and did just that Friday. The Hawks made 16-of-21 from the charity stripe with Dietz leading the way, sinking 9-of-9 from the foul line.

SUNY New Paltz also held the slight advantage on the boards (38-37) and owned the turnover battle, with the Golden Eagles suffering 20 turnovers to just 11 by the Hawks.
