SUNY New Paltz Softball Grind Out Pair of Wins at Day 2 of PFX Spring Games

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, FL — After day two of the PFX Spring Games for the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team the Hawks remain undefeated, churning out two more impressive performances in Clermont, Florida Sunday.

SUNY New Paltz (5-0) battled in an eight-inning thriller to steal a win over Stevenson University, 7-6 in the first win of the day before piling on a 13-6 victory over Allegheny College in game two.

"Today was a great day," said Hawks coach Krysti Maronski. "In both games no matter what happened we were coming up to the plate with a good approach. In the Stevenson game we had a few innings where we were chasing her pitches and not hitting ours, but we were able to keep our energy up and make adjustments."

After pitching a complete game shutout to close out Saturday, Emily Fox earned the nod in the circle against the Mustangs Sunday. She went four innings, giving up six hits and just two runs with two strikeouts in the outing and was relieved by freshman Julia Mastrup, who made her collegiate debut.Taylor LaFrance GIF

After taking the initial 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Hawks came back to re-gain the advantage in the fifth and sixth innings after Stevenson scored two in the fourth. Leading 3-2 going into the top of the seventh, the Mustangs answered with four runs to gain back control at 6-3.

SUNY New Paltz never lost composure and continued grinding with an opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. Caroline Alicandri led off the inning with a walk, followed by a base hit by Taylor LaFrance. Celia Santini then loaded the bases after a fielders choice gave Stevenson its first out of the inning. Michaela Damore, who had a career afternoon Saturday, came through again with the help of a fielding error to reach safely and score LaFrance from third. Shannon Fee helped add the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice to plate Julia DiSpigna and Kelsey Trudden capped off the rally with an RBI single to bring Nina Simms — who pinch ran for Santini — home.

"When Stevenson went up by three in the top of seventh I told the girls that this is where we show our heart and toughness, and they pulled it through," Maronski said. "It was an awesome win."

Tied at six heading into extra's, Alyssa Pfitscher was in the circle for the Hawks and the veteran made sure to keep the score knotted. After two runners reached base with no outs, Pfitscher got out of the jam, forcing three-straight pop outs to close out the top of the eighth.

"With bases loaded I went out to try and settle everyone down and just relax and play their game," Maronski said. "[Pfitscher] did a great job of staying composed."

LaFrance was the difference maker in the last half of the eighth. With SUNY New Paltz in need of a hit, the senior came through with a two-out base knock. Her high school teammate, DiSpigna came through with another two-out single, putting LaFrance in scoring position and shifting all the pressure on to the Mustangs. LaFrance then scored the walk-off run on a heads-up base running play after a fielding error by Stevenson's left fielder to keep the Hawks' undefeated record alive.

"Taylor and Julia did great job today," Maronski said. "Both of them have great speed and are very good base runners, so when they both are going we ware a le to create pressure on the bases."

SUNY New Paltz's offense continued to roll in the second game of the afternoon, scoring a season-high 13 runs against the Gators Sunday. Most of the Hawks' offense came in the third, sixth and seventh innings when Allegheny threatened to rally.

After taking a 1-0 lead into the third, the Hawks broke the game open in the top of the inning. LaFrance instigated the scoring onslaught after taking a one-out walk to put the first SUNY New Paltz batter on. DiSpigna followed with a base hit and Santini then loaded the bases after also earning a free base with a walk.

The Gators nearly got out of the jam after recording the second out on a strikeout, but Fee delivered with a two RBI single to right field for the Hawks to extend her team's lead. Trudden smashed a double to left center in the ensuing at-bat to score two more, while Meagan Blair, getting her second start of the season after delivering in the clutch Saturday as a pinch hitter, smacked an RBI single to score Trudden to cap off the inning.

Allegheny answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but SUNY New Paltz responded with three more runs in the sixth to gain a 9-2 advantage.

Bowen started the inning with a pinch-hit base hit and after Alicandri walked, LaFrance loaded the bases with a single through the left side to set the table for DiSpigna, who plated Puig —pinch running for Bowen —with a sacrifice ground out. Santini then helped advance LaFrance and Alicandri home after a fielding error by the Gators.

Allegheny didn't go away, however, as it fought for three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead, 8-5 heading into the seventh. However, the Hawks never let up and created some breathing room in the final inning to help put away the win.

Puig hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Nicole DePaola from second. LaFrance registered her second hit of the day to load the bases for DiSpigna, who had a patient at-bat to earn a walk and advance another run across the plate. Freshman Carol Ann Campsey added to the damage, knocking a two RBI base hit to left field in her first collegiate at-bat.

The Gators tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning, but the hole was too big to climb out of and the Hawks registered their fifth win of the season to stay undefeated after two days competing in the PFX Spring Games.

SUNY New Paltz has the day off Monday, but will be back in action Tuesday for two more games against Western New England and Calvin College. The latter defeated the Hawks last season in Florida, 1-0.
