SUNY New Paltz Softball Stay Perfect After Two More Wins Over Western New England and Calvin College

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team earned two more wins Tuesday in its fourth day competing in the PFX Spring Games.

The Hawks (7-0 overall) remained perfect on the season after winning a tight, 2-0 game against Western New England College (3-4) and then showing off their offense in a 12-2 rout of Calvin College (6-1).fox_pitching

Emily Fox earned her second win of the season against the Golden Bears, throwing her second-career complete game shutout in the past week alone. The sophomore gave up just three hits, one walk with six strikeouts in an impressive performance.

"Our first game today was a great pitcher's duel," said SUNY New Paltz coach Krysti Maronski. "Emily did a great job of getting ahead in her counts and staying in control and the defense made plays behind her."

The game went scoreless with just two hits combined until the top of the sixth inning. Michaela Damore led off the inning for the Hawks with a walk and Kesley Trudden followed up with a base hit to put two runners on to set the table for Shannon Fee. With Nicole DePaola and Carol Ann Campsey pinch running for Damore and Trudden, respectively, they each got home on a two RBI double by Fee to break the stalemate.

"In the bottom of the sixth we knew we had to score," Maronski said. "I kept telling them to keep sticking to it because we were getting runners on and just not getting the key hit. Shannon had a great day and came through with the double to score Carol Ann and Nicole."

SUNY New Paltz couldn't celebrate the win for too long, as it headed back out to take on the Knights, who had defeated the Hawks, 1-0, last year at the PFX Spring Games. SUNY New Paltz made sure to get out in front early and after just one inning of play created a comfortable 8-0 cushion.

"We were prepared to come out strong against Calvin because we know what a good team they are and that we would need to be on top of our game to win," Maronski said. "We did a great job at the plate of drawing walks and coming through with key hits as well. Katie threw awesome against a very good hitting team."

Each team had just seven hits in the game, but the Hawks earned quality at-bats. They totaled 14 walks in the game and took advantage of early fielding errors by Calvin, which went into the game undefeated.

Meagan Blair took a bases loaded walk to get SUNY New Paltz on the board in the first inning. Ashley Puig followed up with a three RBI double to right center and Celia Santini added on with a two RBI single toward short.

Damore brought Caroline Alicandri home from third after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third inning. Trudden added another run after a walk on the ensuing at-bat and freshman Nikki Bowen capped off the Hawks' offensive night, bringing home Puig on a fielder's choice.

"Overall, to get a win like that shows our potential and that we can play with anyone," Maronski said. "I was so proud of this group for staying up in the dugout from the beginning to end with no stopping."

Katie Quagliana earned the win for SUNY New Paltz, needing to just pitch five innings in the victory. She gave up seven hits, two runs and a walk with two strikeouts to keep her perfect record alive at 4-0.

Fee had a day, leading her team with four hits, while going 4-for-6 at the plate with two runs five RBI's and two walks. LaFrance added four hits, three runs and a walk.

The Hawks are back in action Wednesday as they take on Benedictine University at 11:45 a.m. and D'Youville College at 2 p.m.

A win against either team Wednesday would mark the best ever start for SUNY New Paltz. The Hawks' best opening start came in the 2008 season when they began the year at 7-1, but the no team has ever opened up at 8-0 in program history.

"Moving forward we need to keep focusing on staying in the moment, playing one pitch, one game at a time and just playing our game," Maronski said.
