Coming off a series sweep by SUNY Cortland, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team looks to bounce back a few days earlier than expected when the Hawks take on SUNY Oneonta in a three-game series Wednesday and Thursday at Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
"The last time our backs were against the wall was the Brockport weekend and we won that series, so I think we're gonna take care of business this week," said SUNY New Paltz junior pitcher
Anthony Amoroso. "It's do or die so we have no choice now. Scheduling won't be too big of a deal because we have a lot of good quality arms and everyone's healthy for the most part right now. Guys are excited to get after it."
The series with the Red Dragons was supposed to be played Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., but was moved up due to possible inclement weather on the weekend. The Hawks, who are now 10-14 overall and 2-10 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), will have to find success against their Catskill Cup rival to still have a shot at making the playoffs.
"We have a couple guys banged up so more rest would help, but they have been taking necessary steps for tomorrow," said SUNY New Paltz junior outfielder
Julian Francisco. "Regardless, everyone is ready to step up."
The Hawks have won the last two series against SUNY Oneonta in 2018 and 2017, with their last series loss coming in 2016 to the Red Dragons. SUNY New Paltz beat SUNY Oneonta, 3-1 and 6-1, while also losing 9-3 in the two teams matchups last season.
The Red Dragons are coming off a weekend sweep as well, losing to Oswego State 7-2, 1-0 and 5-2 on April 12 and 13 to move to 4-11 in the SUNYAC. This weekend is big for SUNY Oneonta as well, as the 14-16 overall Red Dragons could lose their spot in contention for a postseason spot with a series loss this week.
"It's going to be a dog fight and we're excited," said Hawks senior outfielder
Danny Campbell. "It's a must win series for both us and Oneonta, and the plan is to go out there and show that we want it more."
Game-one of the double header Wednesday starts at 12 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for 12 p.m. Thursday. To stay up to date with everything #NPHawks be sure to follow us on
