SUNY New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Holds Successful Alumni Weekend Event

| By:
New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation Department hosted Alumni Weekend April 26 and 27, holding its inaugural SUNY New Paltz Athletics Wine Tour and 13th annual Golf Tournament Friday, along with alumni games Saturday.

Despite the poor weather conditions, with heavy rain coming in and out Friday over Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland, NY, the event still brought in a steady amount of golfers. The wine tour also had a good showing for its inaugural run, as parents, community members and alumni alike enjoyed a tour through Robibero Family Vineyards, Benmarl Winery and Nostrano Vineyards.

"I felt the New Paltz Athletics Inaugural Wine Tour was very successful.  Alumni, parents of current students, and community supporters who attended had a great time and gave a lot of great feedback so that we can continue this event next year and make it even more successful," said Hawks Assistant Director of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation of Compliance Danielle Strauchler, who helped coordinate the event. "It was nice spending time getting to know everyone and why they have a special connection to New Paltz Athletics."

Even heavy rain coming in and out over Apple Greens Golf Course couldn't dampen a successful day at the 13th Annual Golf Tournament. Despite the weather conditions, SUNY New Paltz increased golfer participation from last year with the day concluding beautifully at the Apple Greens Barn and Pavilion, a venue that is traditionally used for weddings.golf_winners

"Even with the torrential downpours, we increased the number of golfers at the event and most foursomes battled the elements to finish the day to celebrate in the Barn at Apple Greens, a beautiful wedding venue that hosted our dinner and awards reception for the first time," said Hawks men's soccer coach and event coordinator Kyle Clancy. "It was a great conclusion to a great event, with the winner of the tournament being decided by a putt-off on the 26th green to break the tie.  The eventual winners were a baseball alumni group - John DeKams, George Perry, Justin Buonamano, Kraig Brigham and Ryan Schafer.  We appreciate everyone support and hope to see everyone back for our 14th outing next year on April 24."

Following a positive day, fun-filled day Friday, alumni from men's and women's soccer, field hockey, women's volleyball and men's and women's basketball were invited back to greet current members and also participate in the annual alumni games. A large amount of alumni came back to support their aluma mater from all six programs.

"We had a great turnout of alumni from a good mix of past teams," Clancy said. "This year we changed the format to have alumni play the alumni and we went even graduation years vs. odd.  It turned out to be a successful event and a competitive game enjoyed by all, with the even graduation years winning 3-1.  We look forward to continuing this new tradition in the years to come and appreciate the support from the alumni that were able to attend."
