The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team, after coming away with a disappointing loss to No. 8 Vassar College Saturday, is determined to get back in the win column Wednesday when it hosts RPI.
The loss to the Brewers was the Hawks' second straight, as they also fell Sept. 4 against No. 13 Montclair State, 1-0.
During SUNY New Paltz's first four games of the season, it has totaled just seven goals, averaging less than two per game, despite out-shooting the opposition 65-34, while totaling 45 penalty corners per game.Â
"We have to take chances, and we have to take them early on instead of just waiting for someone to score on us and having that sense of urgency," said Hawks coach
Shanna Szablinski following the loss against Red Hawks. "And instill that belief and mindset that we are just as good as these teams who are ranked in the country. We're playing with them if not playing better than them, but we have to be able to execute. The bottom line is that you got to score."
SUNY New Paltz (2-2 overall) has a great opportunity to bounce back with a convincing win Wednesday against a struggling Engineers team, which has yet to win a game in 2019. RPI (0-4) is coming off a 4-0 loss at home to Endicott College and has been shutout in its last two games.
The Engineers has scored just two goals thus far, with senior midfielder Katina Shiomos and sophomore Lauren Roy each tallying a score. Jen Richardson has gotten every start thus far in goal, while Marissa Florio has seen action in RPI's opening two contests, picking up two losses on the year.
Sophomore midfielder
Morgan Gunter leads the Hawks' young attack with three goals.
Carly Croteau follows with two goals on the year, while freshman
Natasia Plunkett and
Jessica Ascencao each have one apiece thus far.
Ryan Dowling has played every minute in goal for SUNY New Paltz and has allowed just seven goals against, with 16 saves and a .696 save percentage.
The Hawks are set to take on RPI Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on the North Turf Field.
