Utica, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team bounced back from its first loss of 2019 with a convincing, 2-0 victory over Morrisville State at the Utica College Invitational Sunday.
"I was really happy with the response from the team today," said Hawks coach
Kyle Clancy. "We were much sharper on the ball and really did a nice job executing the game plan."
SUNY New Paltz (3-1 overall) played the majority of the game on the Mustangs' (1-3) defensive side of the field, piling on 14 shots, eight of which were on frame with 10 corners in the game. The Hawks tallied 10 shots in the first half alone, but went into the break with the game still scoreless.
Tommy Jelstrom broke up the stalemate for SUNY New Paltz, as the sophomore transfer put away a corner played in by junior midfielder
Kevin Doorley in the 59th minute.
James Maltes then added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute to solidify the 2-0 win.
"We just struggled a bit in the final third, first with the final pass, then finishing when we finally connected on a good ball," add Clancy. "I was confident when we found the net though, and it was a great clinical finish from Tommy after an excellent delivery from Kevin."
Doorley led the Hawks with five shots, followed by
Luke Dole and Maltes, who each had two.
Declan Costello earned his first career start with the senior tallying two saves in the win.
The Hawks are back in action Wednesday when they host non-conference rival Vassar College on the South Turf field at 4 p.m.
"It was good to get the result and i believe the guys are confident as we head into the game versus Vassar this Week," Clancy said.
