Utica, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 2-0 to SUNY Cobleskill in the first day of the Utica College Invitational.
"Cobleskill outworked us and did a great job pressing as a unit, and we struggled to possess the ball and build out of the back," said Hawks coach
Kyle Clancy. "Our passing was not as sharp today and we struggled to create many good chances. Overall, just a bad day for us and a good learning experience."
The Fighting Tigers (2-1 overall) took the lead in the 23rd minute off an unassisted goal by Mame Amar. The score remained at 1-0 for the majority of the time before Chris Gardener added to Cobleskill's cushion in the 85th minute to solidify the win.
The Hawks (2-1) were out-shot in the game, 13-5, but totaled eight corners to the Fighting Tigers' two, but could not convert on the set piece.
Gordon Walker,
Kevin Doorley,
Coltan Goodwine,
Ryan Stevens and
Tommy Jelstrom all registered a shot on the afternoon.
Marc DePasquale, meanwhile, recorded four saves in his first loss after two-straight shutouts to start the season.
The Hawks are back in action Sunday to conclude the Utica College Invitational, playing Morrisville State at 2:30 p.m.
