Geneseo, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz suffered its third consecutive loss and fifth conference defeat of the season Friday, falling on the road to SUNY Geneseo, 62-53.
The first half was a low scoring affair on both sides, combining for just 38 points on 14 made shots. The Hawks connected on just 23 percent in the first 20 minutes, while the Knights also struggled from the field, making 32 percent. The two teams traded leads five times in the first half until Geneseo ended the stretch on a 7-0 run at the break to take a 22-16 lead.
The opening five minutes of the second half mirrored the first 20, with
Aaron Satin getting SUNY New Paltz within three after a made basket from beyond the perimeter. Geneseo countered with a 13-0 run that opened up a double-digit hole for the Hawks. That deficit ballooned to as many as 16 with about 12 minutes to go, but SUNY New Paltz worked its way back to within six about four minutes later following a made basket in the paint by freshman
Tyreik Frazier.
However, the Knights once again countered to re-establish their double-figure cushion.
Scott Reisert put an end to a 6-0 Geneseo run, but the two teams started

trading baskets from there.
Tristan Wissemann started gaining the hot-hand, sinking one of his three made shots from the perimeter with four minutes remaining. Elijah Wingfield answered with a trey of his own, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Reisert and Wissemann cut the deficit to eight with 2:20 remaining. Michael Gannon answered with a 3 for Geneseo and the Knights connected on 6-of-10 from the free throw line to keep the Hawks at arms length and pull away for the win.
SUNY New Paltz dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), while the Knights improved to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the SUNYAC.
Wissemann led the Hawks with 16 points on 6-for-14 shooting with four assists and three rebounds. Reisert followed with 12 points, making 5-for-8 from the field, with two rebounds and two steals.
Nick Arthur added six points, three rebounds and two blocks.
SUNY New Palt is back on the floor Saturday when it travels to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m.
