Cortland, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly awards Monday and State University of New York at New Paltz senior forward
Maddie Van Pelt was named as the women's basketball SUNYAC/PrestoSports Athlete of the Week. She joins fellow seniors
Philesha Teape and
Paige Niemeyer to be named this season for the weekly honor.
Van Pelt was crucial in all three games this week for the Hawks. She started the three-game stretch with 20 points in an important win over SUNY Cortland Tuesday, which helped clinch the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC tournament. She shot 7-for-12 from the field and hit a huge 3-pointer late that got her team back in the game and eventually secure the, 74-68 overtime victory.
On the road against Plattsburgh State, Van Pelt totaled game-high's in points (15), rebounds (7) and field goals made (6), while shooting an efficient 6-for-11 from the field and adding three assists and three steals in just 26 minutes to lead her team to a 73-45 victory. Van Pelt concluded the weekend with another impressive performance, needing just 18 minutes to score 19 points in a dominating, 78-55 win over SUNY Potsdam. The Montgomery, NY native had another productive night, finishing 50 percent from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, while pulling down four rebounds and adding a team-high four assists and two steals. The victory also officially made Van Pelt and her fellow seniors (Teape, Niemeyer and
Marion Dietz) the program's all-time win leaders, notching 84 career victories.
The quartet hope to add to that total this weekend when they host the semi- and finals of the SUNYAC Championship Friday and Saturday, respectively in the Hawk Center.
